Session log — medilearn.africa Vimeo connection and Jantina past-event recording
Summary
Connected the live medilearn.africa site to Vimeo (manual fetch only, no automation), then added the recorded Jantina de Vries ethics talk to the Past Events page so it plays on the site. Along the way we cleared up a naming mix-up left over from the 28 May go-live, which had caused the Vimeo key to be saved on the wrong copy at first. Everything was corrected and verified, and all changes were backed up.
Decisions
- Vimeo access: reuse the existing "Mobilearn Admin" Vimeo account key (the same one used by s2l and the courses site) rather than create a new one. Hasmukh authorised this.
- Scope: manual fetch from Vimeo only. No nightly sync and no scheduled jobs.
- The live medilearn.africa site is the one to connect, not the staging copy. The first attempt landed on the staging copy because the project notes still reflected the pre-go-live layout.
- Jantina recording privacy: set the video to hidden on Vimeo and allowed to play only on the live medilearn.africa address. This is the strongest-privacy option, the same pattern used for the s2l video library. A password-protected video was ruled out because it still shows a password box inside an embedded player.
- Leave the old medistage.medilearn.africa forwarding address in place. It quietly redirects to medilearn.africa and is useful for catching old links after the go-live.
- Naming: refer to the live site as medilearn.africa from now on, to avoid the confusion the old internal nickname was causing.
Changes made
- Saved the Vimeo key into the live site's course settings. Confirmed it reaches the Mobilearn Admin account and that the built-in Test Connection passes.
- Removed the Vimeo key from the staging copy, restoring it to its original state. Backups taken of both before changes.
- Past Events on the live site: set the recording on the Jantina de Vries ethics talk (event dated 10 September 2025) to the Vimeo video titled "MLUCT38 Ethics - Jantina De Vries". A "Watch the recording" button now appears on medilearn.africa/past-events.
- On Vimeo: switched the Jantina video from password to hidden, and allowed medilearn.africa (and www) to embed it. The video's previous settings were backed up first.
- Verified the live Past Events page loads correctly and shows the recording button pointing at the right video, with no new site errors.
- Updated the assistant's own working notes to record the correct site layout after the go-live, so the mix-up cannot happen again.
Site layout clarified (after the 28 May go-live)
- medilearn.africa (and www) is the live public site.
- medistage.medilearn.africa now simply forwards to medilearn.africa (same website).
- staging.medilearn.africa is a separate work-in-progress copy, not the public site.
- mashiko.medilearn.africa is Prof Mashiko Setshedi's standalone profile page.
Follow-ups
- Hasmukh to open medilearn.africa/past-events, find the Jantina ethics talk, and click "Watch the recording" to confirm it plays (the one step that can only be checked in a browser).
- When building courses on the live site later, paste Vimeo links into lessons and use the manual fetch. The nightly auto-refresh and the play-only-on-our-site lock-down can be added then if wanted.
- A pre-existing background error in the live site's admin action log (unrelated to today's work) is worth a look in a future session.
